On another occasion the small switch on the back (which I think was labeled 110 - 220) was flipped from the lower setting (110?) to the higher setting (220?) and made it come on - Yes I know it's voltage and how it works and all that jazz but I haven't seen a power supply with that little switch on it for years so I'm going by memory as to if it said 110 and 220. I have no idea what the thought process was to open the case and blow extra heat in but I was quite thoroughly entertained that it worked (not suggesting anyone do that, just recalling an event). On one occasion a hair dryer was used to blow extra heat into the case. Did a bunch of testing, switched a bunch of stuff, it turned out to be the power supply.

I do not care what you call the tool back in the day when the dinosaurs roamed the computer planet, and desktop computers were lucky to have two 8 inch hard sectored floppy drives, we called the tool a stress test tool, and it ran diagnostics, and stress tested the system, depending on your request. Several folks have commented that we really do not want a stress test tool, but instead a diagnostic tool. So your suggestion of a component heating goes back to our original diagnoses, and reason for posting the question. Then later in the day it was totally dark to the world on the screen again. It booted right up with graphics, and appeared to function normally. We let it sit overnight, and it was perfectly happy in the morning. Then we took the machine back to the lab where it produced the same results on our bench no graphics. (Yep we ripped the power cord out of the back and made it start over.) Still no graphics at all plenty of computer front panel lights, and keyboard lights. That did not help, even after a forced reboot of the machine. The first thing we tried was swapping in a new monitor at the user's workstation. There is no help from bios beep diagnostics, since the machine boots.
